Magan Hendry [00:00:08]:
We are two moms who are sharing our experiences and realistic advice on healthy.

Brandi Wigley [00:00:12]:
Motherhood, enjoying humor and a cocktail along the way.

Magan Hendry [00:00:18]:
Hey.

Brandi Wigley [00:00:19]:
Hey, friends. It is Black Friday and I'm hoping that y'all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with all of your people and that your cup is full.

Magan Hendry [00:00:29]:
Full.

Brandi Wigley [00:00:30]:
And some of y'all are ready to shop today.

Magan Hendry [00:00:33]:
Oh, my goodness. Black Friday, such a huge deal. Listen, tell me, Brandy, what did y'all do for Thanksgiving? Like, did family come to your home or did y'all go somewhere?

Brandi Wigley [00:00:44]:
Yeah, so our family is kind of spread out and so like my family is in South Georgia, which is about three hours away. Kev's family is here and so we stayed in Atlanta and went to his 93 year old grandmother's house. Kev smoked a turkey. It was just a good day. Really good day. And then tomorrow my entire family comes up. My niece is in the Nutcracker. So we start right away full on holiday cheer with Nutcracker.

Brandi Wigley [00:01:16]:
That's how we kick off the Christmas season. What about you guys?

Magan Hendry [00:01:19]:
I love that we also, every year, Andrew and I like to literally kick off the holiday season at Thanksgiving, like Christmas season at Thanksgiving. There have been years where we have gone just our little family to like the Gaylord to do ice. They have the big ice thing there. All the Christmas decor is up. So our family is like, it's pretty much just his mom, my mom, and then his sister, my sister. But a lot of times my sister's working. So Thanksgiving's never been like a huge family gathering for us. So we take advantage of that and sometimes we travel if we want to.

Magan Hendry [00:02:06]:
There has been a year where we took both of our moms to like Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and all of the Christmas was up and we ate together and literally kicked off Christmas right then and there. I feel like the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is short. You need that kickoff, you know, to really get everyone in the holiday spirit.

Brandi Wigley [00:02:31]:
I love it. Talk about Black Friday. I mean, I, I was just thinking about, like Black Friday and Black Friday looks so different than when we were growing up. I mean, let's talk about Black Friday.

Magan Hendry [00:02:43]:
When we were growing up.

Brandi Wigley [00:02:45]:
You would love to because I do crazy stories. I mean, we would go. I mean, I grew up in a one red light town, right? It's like 30 minutes to a Walmart. Our closest, like big Walmart. Was it a super Walmart? Do you remember super Walmarts? Our closest super Walmart was in Statesboro. And that was like 35 minutes away. But us in our entire three counties that were surrounding states for would be at that Walmart on Black Friday trying to get the deals or we would go to Savannah. My favorite was going to Savannah and trying to, you know, go to limited to.

Brandi Wigley [00:03:25]:
And get the good.

Magan Hendry [00:03:26]:
The goods. Yeah. So Black Friday, pretty much, I remember growing up literally started and maybe it changed a little bit. But that night, like, Thanksgiving night.

Brandi Wigley [00:03:38]:
Yeah.

Magan Hendry [00:03:38]:
And my fondest memories with my cousins and my aunts and my grandmother was we would leave after Thanksgiving dinner. Like, we'd leave all the men. Right. And we would go. And so also small, like one red light town. We would go 30 minutes to a town called Waycross, Georgia, and they had Walmart, they had belt, they had something else. And they had a Shawnee's listening. Oh, my gosh, that just took me back.

Brandi Wigley [00:04:14]:
I love the Shoney's that if we were.

Magan Hendry [00:04:16]:
If we were doing this on like a Friday, then I remember going to Shoney's. I think Black Friday has evolved so much. Right. Like, I can literally think back on the years and think about when it was truly just Black Friday. And we would do, like, the Shawnee's thing. Then it went to. We were leaving after Thanksgiving dinner and we were all going shopping. And then I remember, like, it getting where a little crazy.

Magan Hendry [00:04:51]:
People started fighting over TVs. Like, I remember seeing people, like, growing up, they began to fight over the TVs. People would have their shopping carts and they would be running to call dibs on, like, certain things. And it started getting crazy. Then I remember the older I got, I guess I started, like, I. I remember starting to date Andrew moving over, like, to the Valdosta area. And then we would do Target. You would wait in this long line for Target.

Magan Hendry [00:05:21]:
And it was really good deals in store, right? Oh, yeah. Then I remember another year we did it and we went and the deals were the same online as in the store. And then that was pretty much it for us. Like, we were like, okay, like, we'll just be ready, set, go for Target online. And we started getting sad. Like Andrew's sister. And I remember we talked about it. We were like, I'm kind of bummed.

Magan Hendry [00:05:49]:
Yeah. Like, you literally, like, we. We don't really need to go. Like, I remember our last selfie that we took in front of, like, the Target store. Black Friday waiting in line. Like that was it the end story over. You know, Isn't that funny?

Brandi Wigley [00:06:03]:
Yeah, I can remember. This is gonna. This is gonna age me a little. Bit is that I remember Kevin and my first apartment here in Atlanta. We went to Best Buy and waited in line because we wanted the first flat screen tv.

Magan Hendry [00:06:20]:
Oh.

Brandi Wigley [00:06:21]:
So as a newly married couple, we waited in line. I think we paid like 200 for that thing. It was on like, it was like a door buster. And it was small, y'all. I mean, it was like a 36. But we thought something with our little flat screen TV and 200 was a lot of money to us, which, I mean, $200, it's still a lot of money, but we thought we were something. But then, yeah, just like you said, like, I was. I remember I was cold because it was cold that year and waiting in line and getting that door buster.

Brandi Wigley [00:06:53]:
And we saw like a fight breakout. And then the next couple of years, as the Internet, you know, became more.

Magan Hendry [00:06:59]:
And more, we didn't.

Brandi Wigley [00:07:01]:
We didn't have to do that anymore. And so, yeah, now I'm like an online shopper. I don't miss waiting in line. I don't miss seeing the fights break out. But there was something like, magical about Black Friday and, like, getting the deals and, like, being there in person. But I'm not upset about the deals starting early. I'm not upset about that.

Magan Hendry [00:07:22]:
What, like Walmart, Target, Amazon? I think Andrew and I were looking. Amazon started like the 21st or 22nd this year. And then, you know, so my sister in law. One thing about it is as we. As things change and Black Friday has evolved, I think it is really neat to pay attention to how or how you can still keep the fun traditions going. Like, she and I will still text one another and she's like, hey, I just caught this deal for, you know, her son. And I'm like, okay, gotta buy the same thing for my boys. So we still have fun with it.

Magan Hendry [00:08:04]:
But yeah, it's. It's a lot different.

Brandi Wigley [00:08:07]:
Oh, wait. Maybe that's what we need to do right now. Okay, I want to share what our hit list is for Black Friday. What deals are we looking for? And we need all of y'all fit and fizzy listeners to help us find our stuff. And if you share what you're looking for, we'll reshare that out too. Okay. So, Magan, what is on your Black Friday list? What are you trying to get the good deals on, y'all?

Magan Hendry [00:08:33]:
I love kitchen. Kitchen stuff, right? So I would like a new air fryer this year. My husband thinks that's ridiculous. He's like, babe, that's not like a present. And I'm Like, I'm not looking for a present. I'm looking for a deal. So I.

Brandi Wigley [00:08:49]:
You don't have to wrap it up. Just give it to me.

Magan Hendry [00:08:52]:
So I need an air fryer. And then brandy, to be honest with you. I want waiting for that wallpaper to go back down to 30 on Black Friday.

Brandi Wigley [00:09:02]:
Oh, my gosh, y'all.

Magan Hendry [00:09:03]:
My.

Brandi Wigley [00:09:04]:
My Black Friday hit list. I'm gonna read it to y'all because I need y'all all to be all hands on deck looking for the deals because it's 2024 and we're all out here looking for deals. So I also want a new air fryer, but I want one that's non toxic. So, like the glass bottom ones. That's what I'm looking for. Because they say that PFAs are in everything, especially in air fryers. So I'm looking for non toxic glass bottom air fryer. I am also looking for a ninja creamy.

Brandi Wigley [00:09:34]:
I mentioned it before on the podcast. I mentioned it again. I want a dang Ninja Creamy. So if you see a good deal on that, y'all, I'm gonna. I have a whole grocery list right here. I am looking for a tramp. Hey, Evelyn and Eleanor, if you're listening right now, Turn this off. 1, 2, 3.

Brandi Wigley [00:09:54]:
Turn this off right now. Okay, so I'm looking for a trampoline. I'm looking for gravity bikes. Or wait, no, is that what they're called? Gravity bikes? I can't remember. I'm looking for bikes, and then I'm looking for a vanity for Evelyn. So if y'all see really good deals on those things, I'm looking for those. And then for me, I want wallpaper. Yeah, I also want some pickleball stuff.

Brandi Wigley [00:10:20]:
Did y'all know? Did y'all know I'm a granny and I love wallpaper? Pickleball. And I'm also looking for some. Some needlepoint deals. So if you'll see some needlepoint deals out there, let your girl know.

Magan Hendry [00:10:33]:
I love it. Listen, I. Your list is good. You are organized. This is the difference in Brandy and I. Okay, one, me flying by the seat of my pants when I'm telling people not to. I'm kidding. And then Brandy organize list.

Magan Hendry [00:10:49]:
But I'll just get whatever air fryer you get. But I want y'all to add this to your list. Ember mug. Okay, Mine just went out. I got one two years ago, and I ordered it for myself from my dad. Like, I used to do all my dad's Christmas shopping for him, and I'd Be like, ember mug. I'll buy that for myself. Literally the best gift that I ever got.

Magan Hendry [00:11:14]:
Really? An Ember keeps your. Do you not have one?

Brandi Wigley [00:11:19]:
No, I don't because I move around the house too much. And don't you have to put it, like, on a docking station to keep it warm?

Magan Hendry [00:11:24]:
No, you put it on a docking station at night to charge it.

Brandi Wigley [00:11:29]:
I do not need one more thing to charge Magan. I got cords. Always in our house.

Magan Hendry [00:11:33]:
It's worth it, y'all. It keeps your coffee hot, like, for a long time. And you don't. It.

Brandi Wigley [00:11:39]:
Okay.

Magan Hendry [00:11:40]:
You don't have to continue to go to the microwave and heat up your coffee. There's travel mugs, too, but there's just something about an open mug for me, especially in the winter. And that's why I love the Ember mug so much. If you connect it to your phone on a. Like an app. Just app. And you don't have to connect it every morning. Literally, like, I put my.

Magan Hendry [00:12:00]:
I pour my coffee in there, and then it just automatically connects to my phone. It's so easy. And those are always on sale Black Friday. And if they're not, then, like, if they're not on sale, I don't really want to buy it because the savings on Black Friday are so good. So definitely check it out today if you like your coffee hot.

Brandi Wigley [00:12:21]:
I love that.

Magan Hendry [00:12:22]:
It's a good gift, too, for, like, mother in laws. Like, my mother in law likes hot coffee. My sister drinks coffee. My actually got my sister. We got my sister one last year. Everybody likes hot coffee. Brandy, do you want one?

Brandi Wigley [00:12:36]:
I don't know. I don't know. I. When I tell you we have a whole cabinet in our house that is dedicated to charging all of the things because it. It's just too many things need to be charged now. We've got lamps that need to get charged. We've got light bulbs that need to get charged. Laptops that.

Brandi Wigley [00:12:53]:
I just feel like I don't need one more thing to charge. But maybe I'd like one. I don't know.

Magan Hendry [00:12:59]:
Well, I'm not going to buy you one then if you're not sure were you going to.

Brandi Wigley [00:13:03]:
Maybe I do want one now.

Magan Hendry [00:13:04]:
Maybe if the last Friday deal was.

Brandi Wigley [00:13:07]:
Good enough, maybe we need to do an episode that is like the best gifts. Oh, remember when Oprah used to do her favorite things episode? Do we think we're Oprah now? Do we need to do a favorite things episode?

Magan Hendry [00:13:20]:
If I had money like that, I would be. I would just be buying Stuff for everybody. Sometimes I like to pretend I have money like that, and I like to buy things for everyone.

Brandi Wigley [00:13:33]:
Sometimes I pretend to have money like that, and I like to buy stuff for me.

Magan Hendry [00:13:37]:
Yeah, same. I really like to shop. So now I will say this about Black Friday. It has turned into, yeah, we buy gifts, right? Like, good deals on gifts, but a lot of times it's things that I do feel like we need. Like, the boys need jeans, right? You know, jeans are a good deal on Black Friday. It turns into me buying stuff like that. And then Andrew's like, hey, babe, why, like, we're looking at the Christmas piles, You know, the night before Christmas, he's like, where's all the presents? And I'm like, harrison's been wearing his, you know?

Brandi Wigley [00:14:18]:
Yeah, like, we need. We need towels. And I'm looking at wheezy towels right now. I'm like, okay, maybe literally, Sutton, this is bad.

Magan Hendry [00:14:26]:
Sutton told me because, y'all, he's so, like. I mean, smells and every and feel. And like, he's like, mom, this towel doesn't smell like it used to. I think we need new towels. And I'm like, if your kid says you need new towels, then you need new towels.

Brandi Wigley [00:14:43]:
That means, again, you need new towels. I love it. I think that that is all about, like, shopping. With y'all know me, everything is with intention. My list is with intention. Shopping is with intention. And I think that this is the perfect segue into, like, starting this holiday season with intention. This.

Brandi Wigley [00:15:04]:
This holiday, starting with today, can feel like a runaway train, and it doesn't have to. And y'all know I love a good non negotiable. And I think that setting the tone for the next, you know, bit is really important. So things like family time and daily walks and keeping up, you know, your schedule as manageable is, like, wildly important. It's like living this next month with.

Magan Hendry [00:15:26]:
Intention literally took the words out of my mouth because when I think about, first of all, my family and then, I think, you know, narrow it down to this very special season, I want to look back and think to myself, you know, what you did? Like, you lived in that moment with the kids, and you were intentional. And I think, Brandi, in order for us, you know, especially as women, like, we have to take things a step further, y'all. We can't just think, oh, I want to be intentional this season. We have to really set some things into place each and every week so that we can show up the way that we want to show up.

Brandi Wigley [00:16:19]:
Yeah, I love That I think it's about like really protecting your peace and not getting overwhelmed. And you know, I love a good. What do I. What is it that I always say Strategic no's for stronger yeses. And sometimes that is what, you know, we've got to do. This holiday is like, be really intentional about our calendar. I love setting like little, little things. So strategic no's for stronger yeses, but also very.

Brandi Wigley [00:16:42]:
I want to simplify this thing, things. This year we moved into a new house and I went through all the tubs. I'm not putting out half decorations. I used to because I just want it to be more simple this year. Like, I don't want the chaos of everything. So really being, simplifying things, being healthy, being joyful, like that is really like my focus this season. What about yours, Magan?

Magan Hendry [00:17:04]:
Like, you're setting a mantra, right? Like, joy, simple, healthy.

Brandi Wigley [00:17:11]:
Yeah.

Magan Hendry [00:17:12]:
I want to feel my best. I want to have mental clarity. Like that helps me be in the moment as my, as my best self. And I think this past year, like, I lost my dad last January for those that don't know. And so this year I have really viewed things a lot differently. And you just, your outlook on life really does change. And things that used to like, hurt my nerves, like, even with I love you, I don't think Andrew's mom listens to us, but she might. But like, even with my mother in law, my mom, anything that used to like really hurt my nerves, like, doesn't anymore because I truly feel like, oh, I love that life is short.

Magan Hendry [00:18:06]:
And you know, there's absolutely times where we do have to like put our foot down and we're like, nah, like the hindries. You like this little part of the fam. Like, this is what we're doing. Y'all are invited. I get that. You know, like a lot of moms are like, say no. Yeah, you know, you, you do what you want with your family. But then I'm also like, is it really that big a deal? I mean, you know, like, enjoy your people because they might not be there forever.

Magan Hendry [00:18:33]:
And if something's really not a huge deal, take a deep breath and just kind of go with it. Our one thing, Brandy, when you were talking about like decor, like Christmas decor, I love seeing everyone's beautiful Christmas decorations. But this year with our renovation, when I'm looking at Instagram and I see everybody's like peaceful, joyful, beautiful homes, it makes my chest tight totally. Just a little bit. So I've had to kind of like, seriously take a Deep breath and just be like, okay, what can I do right now? Literally. Yeah, I have my boys. Like, I let them drag out the Christmas decorations. It doesn't look exactly as I want to, but we have like Christmas decor in their room.

Magan Hendry [00:19:25]:
So you guys, if you're overwhelmed with Christmas decorations and thing, everything has to be so pretty. Like, maybe you focus on just one little spot in your home and that's your like, joyful little spot. Yeah, simplify, man, simplify.

Brandi Wigley [00:19:39]:
Because I mean, I can look. I'm just like you. I look at all these Instagram and I do love good home. Like, I love like a really good home interiors Instagram. Like, I love looking through that stuff. But it can be so intimidating. Like, it can be wildly intimidating. And you're thinking, well, if I don't have a new color, like color scheme every year and like this beautiful.

Brandi Wigley [00:20:01]:
No, that does not mean that I'm not experiencing any joy this holiday season. If I don't have this beautiful Southern living tree, that's just not it. And so, like, being really intentional and simplifying things has been so, so helpful for like protecting my pieces holiday season. And that's really setting a good tone. Let's talk about, like staying healthy through the festive chaos. Like, let's talk about it. So I, I want to hear from you, like, what are your go to.

Magan Hendry [00:20:31]:
Tips planning ahead so that I'm literally not running ragged? Yeah. All of the time. Like going into my week no matter what, like, it's going to look differently every single week. Like the kids are out of school. That's going to look different than when they're back in school and leading up to Christmas. So looking at what I have, looking at the nights that we're going to be away, even like little holiday parties, like, you know, a lot of us are, like, things are expensive right now. I've thought about making sure that, like, if I don't have a ton of groceries to buy that week, maybe shifting that money just a little bit to getting things for their little, like gingerbread parties that we're doing with cousins. You know, like, really being organized, like that is like my mental health tip as far as, like, physically healthy workouts give me energy.

Magan Hendry [00:21:29]:
And so I'm, you know, still hitting that hard with my 30 minute workouts. Right. As far as nutrition, what do you think, Brandi?

Brandi Wigley [00:21:38]:
I mean, truly, like, just making sure that at every single meal I've got a protein, I've got a healthy fat, and I've got some fiber on my plate. And if I can just stick with those three things. Like, I will have energy. I will feel really good. The bloat's gonna be under control if I get those three things. Like, I can be energized if I just make sure our protein, healthy fat, and fiber at every single meal. Just keep moving and, like, staying intentional. Packing snacks, because y'all know we're gonna be running a million errands as moms before Christmas day hits.

Brandi Wigley [00:22:09]:
So, like, having some little snacks in my bag. Having little snacks in my car. I'm like a little old granny with their little snack bags everywhere. But I truly think that it makes the biggest difference to keep me from going to an Annie's Pretzel when I'm at the mall running the inevitable.

Magan Hendry [00:22:26]:
And that, you know, to think, say, Brandy, you've talked about. You've given this. Gosh, you wouldn't call it an analogy, but, you know, like, where you're. Think about how you want to feel the next day. Sometimes with treats now, like, the Annie's Pretzel, like, you're in the mall. Like, I don't even know if you're in the mall, but wherever you're getting an Annie's Pretzel, like, is that something you truly like feel like you gotta have that. Comparing that to, like, baking cookies with the girls or my boys, Like, I'm gonna choose having a cookie with them over, like, just, like, running through the mall or wherever we are, scarfing down a pretzel that I'm not even, like, really, like, able to enjoy because we're, like, running around. Do you see what I mean? Like, sometimes take a minute, step back just for a second, and just be like, okay, is this pretzel really worth it? Like, do I really want it? Nah.

Magan Hendry [00:23:22]:
You know, just because you say no to a treat during the holiday season doesn't mean that you're not enjoying it. It means that you're empowering your choices, Right? You're in control. So take the time to step back and stay in control of, you know, of your choices. How do you want to feel the cookies? Absolutely. I want to look back and be like, we baked cookies. That cookie was delicious. I sat down with my kiddos. We dipped them in milk, you know, like, we took that time to do that together.

Magan Hendry [00:23:53]:
Do you see the difference?

Brandi Wigley [00:23:55]:
It's the difference in, like, savoring versus scarfing, right? Like, if you're. If you're literally, like, so excited about an Annie's pretzel, and that's, like, one of the reasons why you're going to the mall, you're, like, getting that parking.

Magan Hendry [00:24:11]:
Spot, and you're like, oh, my gosh.

Brandi Wigley [00:24:13]:
I cannot wait to savor that Annie's pretzel. But if you're walking into, you know, Abercrombie, scarfing down that, you know, that pretzel, then you're not savoring it, my friend. Like, that ain't. That ain't it. But if you're, like, putting it on in as a priority in your mind, like, I am actually texting my sister after this to figure out when the cookie party is the cousin cookie party. Like, I'm actually gonna put it on the calendar, because that's something that we look forward to. It's something that we savor. It is a memorable moment for our girls, and I want them to always remember that growing up.

Brandi Wigley [00:24:48]:
Like, if that is it, then that's savoring it. Do you see the difference? There is a big difference there. It is really about being intentional. It is really about, like, making choices for the long term. And sometimes that long term looks like I want my kids to remember, you know, us sitting around the table and decorating. I can't think about. I can't remember the last time I really savored an Annie's pretzel. I can't remember that.

Brandi Wigley [00:25:17]:
You know what I mean? Like, there's the difference that's there, and it's about giving. But I mean, sometimes that Annie's pretzel's gonna win, y'all. Sometimes it is. And it's about giving your safe, yourself, grace, and focus on progress, not perfection. So if you do have that Annie Spretzel because you're at the mall, that's okay. But just know that that can't be the majority of the choices this season. For me, at least, that's. That's kind of, like how I look at it.

Magan Hendry [00:25:40]:
Absolutely. I love that. And I think it's sometimes just about slowing down. You just slow down just for a minute. You know, you think about things differently than if you're just running wild real quick. Last thing I want to touch on holiday movies. Like, when I think about spending time with my. My boys.

Magan Hendry [00:26:07]:
We don't like bacon, a ton of cookies, but Sutton loves to, like, snuggle up and watch a movie. And I think one way for me to kind of slow down with the boys is setting some time aside to really turn on the Christmas movie, lay on the couch, and enjoy. Yeah, a movie. Sutton has his little popcorn. I'll probably eat some with him. Like, that is what he likes to cook the popcorn and then serve it. Like, he will get. He'll make my own me a little bowl of popcorn, and he'll put some of my enjoy life like, chocolate morsels in there.

Magan Hendry [00:26:48]:
Like, he does that. I'm absolutely eating that popcorn, y'all. But do you see how, like, we. We slowed down just for a minute, and that's how we're enjoying it. And it's not just shoving every holiday treat down your throat.

Brandi Wigley [00:27:03]:
Scarfing versus savoring. That's how we're gonna go with it. I love that you know what that means that you're raising a boy who also likes to save for those moments. And he is, Magan. He is gonna make the best husband one day. Oh, my God.

Magan Hendry [00:27:16]:
Oh, my God. That is sweet.

Brandi Wigley [00:27:18]:
That is so sweet. Here's the thing, y'all, is that, like, we want you guys to enjoy this season. We want you guys to feel your very best and show up as your very best. And I think that it's important that we, again, savor the season just like we keep talking about and whether that's today with Black Friday and how you're approaching it today. You know, I think that the slowdown is so important. It's so important. So hopefully you guys have a fantastic Black Friday. Let us know what deals you are looking for.

Brandi Wigley [00:27:56]:
And if you see a trampoline out there, don't tell my kids, but tell.

Magan Hendry [00:28:00]:
Me there'll be one. All right, thank you for tuning in, and we hope that you took some snippets away and we can help you avoid the post holiday slump. How about that? Be intentional. Be intentional. Slow down, and you're gonna avoid that post holiday slump. You're gonna feel amazing going into 2025. Bye, guys. Bye.
